What is a Stoma?

A stoma is an opening on the abdominal wall that is connected to either your bowel (or urinary system)  to allow waste (faeces or urine) to be diverted out of your body.

Let’s learn some more about the main types of Stoma!

At A Bear Named Buttony, we believe it is time to break the stigma.

Poo is not taboo.

Talking openly about bowels, stomas, and digestive health helps children and families feel less alone and more confident. Through our storybooks, Buttony Bear, and school visits, we encourage honest conversations that normalise something every body does.

By educating others and sharing real experiences, we help create a world where no one feels embarrassed about their condition. It is not rude, it is not strange, it is health, and it matters.

Let’s keep the conversation going. Understanding leads to empathy, and empathy changes lives.
